ADHD — what is different
It is one of the most misunderstood names. Here we do not talk about diagnosis or treatment — only about what is known, and what is often misunderstood.
01“There was no such thing before”
The thing we hear most often is: “this didn’t exist before, and now it’s everywhere.” An analysis that combined 135 studies across three decades looked at exactly this question.
The result: differences in the numbers between studies were mostly explained by how they measured. The year a study was done was not linked to the numbers. So, measured the same way, there is no evidence that there really are more such children over time.
More people with a diagnosis and more such children are two different things.
02The name and the reality differ a little
The name says “attention deficit”, but people themselves do not describe a complete lack of attention. They can spend hours on something they love.
That is why it is often explained as regulation — the ability to hold and shift attention to suit the situation.
03How well it has been studied
ADHD is a topic to which a whole issue of a series of medical reviews is devoted, with separate sections on causes, diagnosis, course and treatment.
Here we took only what is most often misunderstood. Diagnosis and treatment are for a professional.
In short
- Measured the same way, there is no evidence that there are more such children over time
- Differences in the numbers between studies come mostly from different ways of measuring
- More diagnoses and more such children are different things
- It is less about a lack of attention than about holding and shifting it to suit the situation
