자라는 뇌 — 나이마다 달라지는 것
뇌는 한꺼번에 다 자라지 않습니다. 자리마다 자라는 때가 다르고, 그 순서에는 규칙이 있습니다. 아이에게 무엇을 기대할 수 있는지 가늠할 때 도움이 되는 그림입니다.
01뒤쪽부터, 앞쪽은 나중에
네 살부터 스물한 살까지를 여러 번 찍어 뇌가 자라는 순서를 그린 연구가 있습니다. 거기서 나온 순서는 이렇습니다. 감각과 시각을 맡는 낮은 차원의 자리가 먼저 자라고, 그것들을 묶어 쓰는 높은 차원의 자리가 나중에 자랍니다.
진화에서 오래된 자리가 먼저, 나중에 생긴 자리가 뒤에 자라는 흐름과도 맞았습니다.
02그래서 계획하고 참는 힘이 늦다
묶어 쓰는 자리에는 계획하기, 순서 정하기, 하던 것을 멈추기 같은 일이 걸려 있습니다. 이 자리가 늦게 자란다는 말은, 그 힘을 어린아이에게 기대하기 어렵다는 뜻이 됩니다.
청소년기를 다룬 글에서는 감정과 보상에 관여하는 자리가 조절을 맡는 자리보다 먼저 자란다는 설명이 자주 쓰입니다. 십대가 위험한 선택을 하는 일이 잦은 것을 이 차이로 풉니다.
